The DAR Patriot Index lists him thus: "Thomas Townsend, born 1732, died 1796. Married Anphilida Watson. Soldier, South Carolina."
There are conflicting accounts regarding the names of his parents. Riely Leon, in his Genealogy of the Townshend-Townsend Family, identifies his father as "John Townsend," but does not identify his mother. The Thomas Townsend memorial on Find A Grave shows his parents as Benadictus Townsend (1710-1790) and Lucille Light (1715-1769), a daughter of William Light. Although the Find A Grave is unsourced, the level of detail it provides adds some credibility to its assertions.
