Note: His brother Alvin was residing with the family during the 1880 census. Orville is the only family member shown in the 1900 census.

According to his wife's Fin A Grave memorial, Orville Benedict Phelps came to Contra Costa County, California, in 1870, and married Miss Esther E. Robertson, daughter of J.W. Robertson (a California pioneer of 1857) in 1873. J.W. Robertson was commonly known as ‘Tod” Robertson, and was quite prominent in the stock business on King’s River. In 1883, Orville & Esther moved to Cross Creek in Tulare County and to Hanford in 1887.
