  • Note: Margaretha Kaul (born c. 1827 in Ermreus, died 1874) endured a life marked by poverty, hardship, and personal loss. She was the daughter of day laborer Adam Kaul and Barbara Zeisler, who married only after the birth of Margaretha and her siblings—reflecting 19th-century economic realities that delayed legal unions among the rural poor. After her father’s early death, Margaretha followed her mother into day labor. In her early 20s, she had a daughter, Anna Margaretha Kaul, with Johann Albert of Hetzles, who provided financial support by court order but took no role in raising the child. Unable to care for Anna herself, Margaretha placed the infant under the guardianship of a retired border guard.

Margaretha later entered a long-term relationship with Joseph Gareis of Gössweinstein, with whom she had six children over 15 years—though five had to be placed into guardianship due to poverty. After Joseph’s premature death in 1868, she had one final child with Johann Gareis, likely a relative of Joseph’s. Tragically, this child died in infancy, and Margaretha herself passed away two years later from spinal meningitis at the age of 47.
