  • Note: Like his father, Karl Friedrich Bauer was a bricklayer by trade. His life was marked by a series of personal tragedies. His father, Johann Georg Bauer, died violently in 1853. His wife died in 1868 after a long illness described as “emaciation,” likely caused by tuberculosis. In 1881, his youngest son, Johann, died of pulmonary tuberculosis, and in 1887, his eldest son, Christian Josef, died of “gastric hardening.” These losses, coupled with the economic downturn of the 1870s and 1880s, left Karl increasingly isolated and financially distressed. In May 1889, at the age of 76, Karl took his own life by hanging himself. His body was found on May 5th, 1889, and his death record indicates that he took his life because of Nahrungssorge (food worries). Whether from shame or at Karl’s request, his family did not invite any clergyman to his burial. Instead, Karl was quietly laid to rest at noon on May 8th in the local cemetery in Trabelsdorf, likely beside his wife and sons.
