However, I think the census taker made a mistake and meant Washington DC for three reasons: I could not find a town named Washington in Washington state; Lewis listed his occupation as "government" attorney; and his parents were residing in Roanoke Virginia (much closer to DC) at the time.8

He was an attorney for Shell Oil before beginning work as a government attorney in 1933. During his government career, he worked for the Public Works Department, Agriculture Department, Federal Works Administration, and Federal Housing Administration. Before he died, he had risen to the position of assistant general counsel of the Federal Housing Administration.8,13
