Facts and Notes

  • Name:3
  • Name:7
  • Birth: About February 1876; MexicoBG; Matilde's birth year varies depending on which source is used. In the 1900 census she indicates that she was born in Feb 1874 and was only two years younger than her husband. In the 1910 census she indicates that she was born in 1881 and was six years younger than her husband. In the 1930 census she indicates she was born in 1884 and was now 12 years younger than her husband. When the 1930 census was enumerated in April of that year Matilde claimed she was 46 years old. However, when she died in December of that same year her son Louis, indicated she was 51 years old, which means she would have been born in 1879. I have chosen to use the 1900 census as the "authoritative" document for her birth because she specifically gives her month and year of birth, rather than her age. She also would have been younger at the time of that census and presumably would have been less confused about her date of birth than she might have been in her later years.1,7,3,4,5

  • Note: Matilde's death certificate indicates that she was born in Arizona in 1879. However, the 1910 census indicates that she immigrated to the United States in 1887 and was born in Mexico. According to oral family history, the family moved to Arizona from Mexico shortly before Matilde's brother (Vicente Reyes) was born in May 1890. Moreover, no record of the Reyes family could be found in the 1882 Arizona Territorial census for Bisbee, suggesting that the death certificate was probably in error and that she was probably really born in Mexico.

According to her death certificate, Matilde lived on the road between the Wylie Store and school house near Dona Ana. She was a housewife and kept house until October 1930, when she apparently contracted tuberculosis. She died two months later, on 4 December 1930. The 1910 census shows that she spoke Spanish, but could not speak English; nor could she read or write.
