  • Note: According to Henry Morton Woodson, James Morton enlisted at the very beginning of the Revolutionary War and served throughout the entire war. He was a lieutenant in the continental line and rose to the rank of major. On account of the splendid manner in which he handled his regiment while under fire, General Washington spoke of him as "Old Solid Column," and that sobriquet attaches to his name to this day. On his service record he appears in the roll dated 9 September 1778 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain John Stith's Company of the 4th Virginia Regiment.
