- Note: Claus Michel Zöbelein was born around 1470, likely in Kolmreuth, a small village in the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg. His biological father was likely Cuntz Zobel, whose farm—situated along the Wiesent River south of Pretzfeld—passed to Claus following the death of his stepmother (Cuntz’s wife) in 1518. The farm, held under a hereditary lease (Erblehen) from the Church of St. Sebald in Nürnberg, spanned about 16 acres and provided enough for both family sustenance and market surplus. Claus and his sons steadily improved the property, which increased in value from 200 Gulden in 1529 to 675 Gulden by 1575. He had at least three sons—Hans Michel (who inherited the front half of the farm), Georg (the back half), and Linhart (who received other possessions). The farm’s layout is still visible on satellite imagery today, with remnants of its ancient boundaries traced in the surrounding landscape.
