- Note: Hans Wiegel was about 19 at the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), which began primarily as a civil war between Protestants and Catholics within the Holy Roman Empire. The Fränkische Schweiz region where he lived was home to both Catholic and Protestant communities, and its fertile farmland and timber made it an attractive target for both armies belonging to both sides. As the armies marched through the area, they trampled fields, plundered granaries, and burned barns, causing food shortages and economic ruin for local farmers. While Hans’ specific fate is unknown, he lived through a time of extreme instability and hardship, and whether he survived the conflict remains uncertain.
