- Note: Christoph Albert lived through the early years of the Thirty Years’ War at the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), which began primarily as a civil war between Protestants and Catholics within the Holy Roman Empire. The Fränkische Schweiz region where he lived was home to both Catholic and Protestant communities, and its fertile farmland and timber made it an attractive target for both armies belonging to both sides. As the armies marched through the area, they trampled fields, plundered granaries, and burned barns, causing food shortages and economic ruin for local farmers. Christoph died before it ended, likely succumbing to the privations of war—military violence, famine, disease, or displacement.
