Hans Köhler1
born about 1596
Facts and Notes
- Note: Hans Köhler was about 22 at the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), which began primarily as a civil war between Protestants and Catholics within the Holy Roman Empire. The Fränkische Schweiz region where he lived was home to both Catholic and Protestant communities, and its fertile farmland and timber made it an attractive target for both armies belonging to both sides. As the armies marched through the area, they trampled fields, plundered granaries, and burned barns, causing food shortages and economic ruin for local farmers. There is no record of his fate, but he would have experienced the economic and social disruptions of the period firsthand.
