- Note: Napoleon’s retreat from Russia brought a new threat to Bavaria: an epidemic of typhus that ravaged the region from 1813 to 1814. Among its victims were Johann Walter and Eva Schwappach. The couple lived in Walsdorf, west of Bamberg, with their eight-month-old daughter Barbara and Johann’s son from a previous marriage. Johann and Eva both contracted typhus in January 1814, and both died as a result; Eva died on the 16th at the age of 33, and Walter four days later, at 34. They were both laid to rest at the local Evangelical-Lutheran church in Walsdorf.
They left behind at least two children: Barbara, who was only eight months old, and Bartholomäus Walter—Johann’s son from his first marriage—who was four. Although we don’t know who cared for them after their parents died, they were most likely taken in by extended family or members of the local community, which was the most common arrangement in small rural villages like Waldorf in the early 19th century. The local church would also have played a significant role in ensuring their welfare and helping to secure suitable guardianship.
