• Note: Michael Bauer’s mother, Marie Anna (née Kröner), began experiencing symptoms of what would later be diagnosed as stomach cancer in late 1925. Initially mild—such as indigestion and loss of appetite—her condition worsened steadily over the first half of 1926. By mid-year, she likely suffered from severe pain, vomiting, and weight loss. Without access to modern diagnostics, her illness was probably known only as a “stomach ailment” within the family. The emotional and physical toll was immense, especially as the family also dealt with the sudden loss of her son, Paul, in early August. Marie Anna’s condition deteriorated rapidly in early September, and she was admitted to the Municipal Hospital in Forchheim, where Dr. Heitz, the Chief Medical Officer, managed her care. She died in the early morning hours of September 2, 1926, at the age of 50. Her death came one month to the day after her son Paul’s suicide. Although her death is officially attributed to stomach cancer, her grandchildren were convinced that she died of a broken heart; probably, it was both.
