  • Note: Biography:

Marianne Bauer, later known as Marianne Reyes, was born in Forchheim, Germany, the third of six children of Michael and Margareta Bauer. Though her birth certificate named her “Marie Anna” after her grandmother, she adopted the name Marianne early in life, preferring it along with affectionate nicknames like Anni or Annie. In 1949 or 1950, she met Roy C. Reyes, a Mexican-American U.S. soldier stationed in Bamberg, in a serendipitous encounter that began with a dance and led to a lifelong partnership. They married in 1954 after the births of their first two children, one of whom, Rosita, tragically died in infancy. Their growing family moved frequently between Germany and the U.S. before settling in Salinas, California, in 1969.

A devoted wife and mother, Marianne held the family together through frequent relocations and Roy’s military deployments, including two tours in Vietnam. Once her children were older, she worked various jobs—from field labor and waitressing to managing restaurants—before realizing her dream of opening Little Bavaria, a successful German restaurant in Salinas. Marianne was the heart of the establishment, known for her warmth, hospitality, and vibrant spirit. Her ambition extended into real estate, and by the time of her passing, she and Roy had built an impressive portfolio of rental properties and homes.

Marianne’s later years were enriched by her grandchildren, William and McKenna, whom she adored and who knew her affectionately as “Omi.” She also indulged her love for travel, making frequent trips to visit her brothers and exploring places like Russia and Greece.

In her final decade, Marianne bravely faced the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, supported by her family and especially by her husband Roy, who cared for her until his passing in 2018. She died peacefully on September 22, 2020, in Sacramento, California. After pandemic-related delays, her ashes were interred on June 22, 2021, beside her beloved husband and daughter at the Garden of Memories in Salinas.
