  Charlotte “Lotte” Bauer was the eldest child of Michael and Margareta Bauer, born in Forchheim, Germany. She married Hans Kotz in 1954, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1961 due to Hans’s alcoholism. The following year, she married Ludwig Holmer, a tool designer, but that marriage also ended after instances of domestic violence related to Ludwig’s drinking.
  
  Lotte never had children but became a loving, maternal figure to her nieces and nephews. In May 1967, she immigrated to the United States to join her sister’s family in Kansas, later moving with them to California. She endured the cross-country trip without complaint, even in uncomfortable conditions.
  
  In California, she worked as a live-in housekeeper and cook for priests at the Carmel Mission Basilica and later at Madonna del Sasso Church in Salinas, serving faithfully for over 25 years. She was known for her strong opinions, humor, and deep dedication to the priests she served. Father Michael Cross, in his memoir Remembering Big Jim, dedicated a chapter to her, praising her hardworking, no-nonsense nature and irreverent wit.
  
  In retirement, Lotte lived next to her friend (and aunt) Gunda, and the two shared many bus trips to Reno. In 2000, she survived a near-fatal aortic aneurysm, but her health declined thereafter. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 12–13, 2000, and was laid to rest in her hometown of Forchheim.
