     Abel Escalante was born circa 1916.1 A survivor of the infamous WW2 Bataan Death March, Abel Escalante was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese for 42 months. While in captivity, his health deteriorated and his weight dropped from 135 pounds to 78 pounds.2 He died on 5 March 1977 at Memorial General Hospital, Las Cruces, Dona Ana, New Mexico.3 He was buried on 10 March 1977 in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. Military graveside rites were performed. Pallbearers were Karl Escalante, Luis Escalante Jr., Albert Holguin, Alex Barreras, Ted Reyes, and Sam Reyes.4
