When he registered for the draft in 1918, William listed his nearest relative as his aunt (Janie McDill), and in the 1920 census, he is residing with his aunt and lists his marital status as "single." If the census is correct, this would imply that both William and Mae were previously married. The Findagrave memorial for William identifies a spouse named "Mary Erhlich."^4,7
